Day 2. 11th Dec 2009.
met at the hotel lobby in the morning to go for breakfast. had breakfast at this chinese restaurant. boss was a chinese lady :) haha. food generally was ok la. just that their fried rice very wet leh =.=;; lol. after that we went back to the hotel to check out and set off for Prey Veng. on the way, we stopped at another market for around 1 hour to do the last shopping before the actual OCIP starts. this market didnt really have a lot of stuff, they only had many many pirated DVDs. i only bought two similar bracelets there and ta da! after the mini shopping, we then officially set off for Prey Veng!

on the bus ride to Prey Veng, we can actually see how the people live there, generally, the city only occupies like a very small part of the country actually. the padi fields, pastures and villages i believe occupied more than 75% of Cambodia bah. cos when looking from inside the airplane i actually can only see fields. haha. somehow, can tell that the villagers led a very simple life, as much as it seems monotonous, i think they are happy :) on the other hand, i think those children not working at the fields may be more stressed cos they had to try to sell stuff to tourists like us to earn a living.. really damn 不捨 to see them walking around in the hot sun carrying such heavy stuff.. sighs. so Singaporeans, APPRECIATE what you have!
before reaching Sang Khem Youth Centre, we had lunch at this quite nice place, looked like holiday resort too. >< haha. food is not bad, can be considered the first try at real Cambodian food! their food generally go for the more salty and sour taste ^^ salty ok for me, sour eh hehe.

after lunch, it only took about another 20 to 30 mins ride before reaching the Youth Centre, the youth centre actually looked quite decent, at least it was made of cement and bricks and not straws. just that the paint was peeling quite a bit. other than that, all fine :) the centre actually had two levels, first level is the centre itself, while the second level is where the landlord lives. our sleeping place for the next 12 nights is actually the landlord's living room. so as part of our settling down, we swept the whole place (which is ULTRA dusty). as for the second level where we are sleeping, due to the absence of dustpan, we had to sweep the dirt etc down the holes between the wooden plank floor. LOL. lucky i was the one sweeping and not the one downstairs. then the guys went with the PDs to Love Cambodia to get our plates, cooking utensils and cutlery for our meals, blankets and some pillows for our sleep. after all the spring cleaning and packing are done, the PDs then brought us to the market which is another culture shock.

unlike the markets in singapore which have shelters etc, theirs are in totally open space. only the meat and the dry food are in sheltered places. their market was like kinda dirty and messy. they dont have rubbish bins, so they dumped all the rubbish in a large rubbish dump in the middle of the market which will be burnt occasionally i think. our rubbish at the youth centre are also brought to the incineration grounds to be burnt. there were seriously tons of flies hovering around those vegetables and even RICE. == even those non-edible food also got flies, you can imagine how gross is that. as it was near sunset that time, so we conveniently went near the river and watched the sunset. after that, some went to buy the cambodia prepaid card while i went with celeste and chitchin to buy dinner. yeps and cos it was dark at that time, the insects started coming out. =.=; and cos insects are attracted to light, they started visiting the restaurant that we wanted to buy dinner at. and yes this was another culture shock, cos the insects flying around were not those stupid flies that you see in your house but grasshoppers, crickets and some other random flies that i swear i have never seen before. 結果我被嚇哭了.... >< lucky the dinner came quite fast if not i really will die of heart attack or out of my own paranoid, thinking that the insects will fly onto me. ok i know i very cowardly but you are not me, so you wont understand my fear either. sighs. insects are really my 死穴 ><

so after dinner = bath time! first time bathing a scary toilet with unknown insects. =.=; inside the toilet still got toad somemore. but the toad after a while kinda got used to it cos it doesnt move anyway. :) so after all the washing up, did the accounts then went to sleep.

before sleeping, a must-do thing is to spray insect repellent on both myself and my sleeping bag. then i will sleep inside the sleeping bag and zip up everything. =.=; literally a suana can. cos inside the room sometimes u really must take note of raining insects >< AHHH. yeah jean and me are suana sisters, cos the first few nights we woke up all sweaty... o but the first night was not the worse... :(
